Kenzo Takada was a central figure in the history of twentieth-century design. He founded his maison in Paris in the 1970s and developed a language that united Japanese visual tradition with the forms of European prêt-à-porter. His work introduced a new sensibility into international fashion, recognizable for its formal freedom, distinctive use of color, and incorporation of diverse cultural references.

In the final stage of his life, Kenzo returned to painting as his medium of expression, approaching it from a perspective that extended his vision as a designer. The female figures he created—their gestures, their colors, and especially the way they are dressed—clearly reflect a sensibility forged over decades of dialogue with fashion. There is no separation between disciplines, but rather a formal and conceptual continuity. The paintings express a way of understanding silhouette, proportion, and beauty that is present throughout his work.

The series The Four Seasons was produced in Buenos Aires between 2008 and 2009, within the framework of his third exhibition as a visual artist. After showing his work in Germany and Morocco, he accepted a friend’s invitation to exhibit at a gallery in San Telmo. Instead of sending finished works from Europe, he chose to work directly in the space, starting from sketches brought from Paris.

Kenzo pays homage to women, beauty, and fashion, but also to great masters of painting such as Monet, Pollock, Fontana, and Picasso. These works offer a rare opportunity to see Kenzo’s vision expressed in a medium that was not his usual one. The figures are dressed by Kenzo—with his line, his proportion, his color. They are a direct extension of his design language, but in a different medium, where fashion resides not only in clothing but also in attitude, silhouette, and visual rhythm.
