Olivier de Schrijver was born in 1958 in Punia, Maniema, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, into a Belgian expatriate family. His early years were shaped by a unique blend of African cultural richness and European education, with the landscapes, materials, and local traditions of his Congolese childhood leaving a lasting impression on his artistic sensibility.
In the 1960s, his family returned to Belgium, where Olivier pursued formal studies in industrial design in Brussels. During this period, he began to develop a personal design language influenced by European modernism, while still drawing heavily from the vivid memories and textures of his African upbringing. These dual influences continue to inform his work and distinguish his creative approach.
